After many years of part time tree service work and firewood sales, Steve Scherdin formed Flower City Tree in 2013 in Kendall, NY. He had previously worked for 31 years at Kodak in the skilled trades as a pipe fitter. At the same time, as Steve was exiting a long industrial career, the demand for his tree service work had outgrown part time demand. Steve enjoys maintaining his 10-acre Christmas tree farm at his home. He is also an avid motorcycle rider, as well as a lifelong boater.
Andrew Scherdin, Steve’s son, became Steve’s business partner in 2014. Since childhood Andrew has run heavy equipment around the family farm, as well as helped his father part time with tree service and firewood operations. Andrew has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. John Fisher. During his career as an accountant he held positions in both public and private practice. His last engagement before moving full time to Flower City Tree was the in-charge accountant for Enterprises Northeast Region Commercial Truck Division. Andrew became a Certified Arborist in December of 2014. TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualified) qualified in November 2015, and CTSP (Certified Treecare Safety Professional) in February 2017.
With the professional ground work in place and the desire to satisfy our customers with exceptional service and workmanship, the Flower City Tree brand and reputation has grown significantly in a very short time. With the dedication of our valued employees, the company has steadily grown to provide quality arbor care services to thousands of satisfied residential clients. When Andrew joined FCT the business was just transitioning from a part time “hobby” to a fledgling full-time enterprise. The company had a couple part time helpers, but FCT gained their first full time employee during the spring of 2014. From that point the company has quickly upgraded their equipment to gain dependability. Currently FCT is operating 2 large capacity chip trucks, 60-yard debris truck, 38-ton Altec Crane, Rear mount bucket truck, CMC tracked lift, Toro dingo, self-propelled stump grinder and 15-inch bandit chipper. FCT has moved operations from Kendall, NY to a strategically located lot near the Rochester International Airport, allowing east access to most major highways in the area as well as high visibility on a very busy street. Flower City Tree workload and income has doubled every season since 2014.
